For thousands of years the Chinese have relieved pain and cured disease through acupuncture.  Evolving from the discovery that using stone needles to prick specific points on the surface of the body could relieve pain and symptoms, acupuncture has become an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), in line with the philosophy that promotes the harmonious coexistence of humans with nature.

According to Records of the Grand Historian, written by Sima Qian about 2,100 years ago, Bian Que, a physician during the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.), was renowned for having saved a prince’s life by using needles to stimulate the Baihui acupoint on the head of the unconscious man.

According to TCM, there are a dozen meridians in the human body, where the qi, or life energy, circulates to nourish the organs.  Cold, infections or diseases can result in the blocking of the energy, so stimulating the acupoints is said to unblock stagnant qi, restore normal circulation and improve health.

In 2010 UNESCO inscribed acupuncture and moxibustion of TCM on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.  Yet the practice is not just cultural and historical, but also a medical technique widely used and researched today.

Despite the clear therapeutic effects of acupuncture in treating many diseases, there were few convincing studies that explained how acupoint stimulation worked, or what meridians were anatomically speaking, so the technique always seemed somewhat mysterious.  However, as scientific research of acupuncture has grown in recent years, producing better quality results, the technique is being more commonly used worldwide.

Through studies conducted over the past century, scholars now have a deep understanding of the working mechanisms of acupuncture, said Jing Xianghong, director of the Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.  Chinese scientists have accumulated a great deal of information in the study of acupuncture analgesia, the sensitization of acupoints, and the effects of acupoint stimulation, she said.

In TCM, acupoints reflect the body’s internal condition.  When diseased or injured, corresponding acupoints become sensitized, displaying effects like expanded receptive fields, heightened pain perception and increased heat sensitivity, which gradually disappear as the body heals.

In 2021 Ma Qiufu, a professor at Harvard University co-authored a paper, titled A Neuroanatomical Basis for Electroacupuncture to Drive the Vagal-Adrenal Axis, with researchers from China including Jing, which was published in the journal Nature.

Since then, basic scientific research on acupuncture and moxibustion has once again drawn the attention of researchers, Jing said.

Based on existing studies it is possible to conclude that the transmission and integration of the nervous system are essential for acupuncture to work, she said.  The neuro-endocrine-immune network serves as the primary carrier for acupuncture’s modulating effects, and molecular biology provides the material basis for explaining the effects of acupuncture.

More simply, the studies show that the nervous system plays a crucial role in acupuncture.  It relies on a network that involves the nervous system, hormones, and the immune system.  Molecular biology also helps explain how acupuncture works.

According to a report by the World Health Organization, acupuncture is the most widely used traditional medicine practice globally.

Between 2002 and 2012 in the United States the number of patients receiving acupuncture grew 50% and the number of licensed acupuncturists doubled, Jing said.

It is now used in 183 countries and regions, and 59 have licensed it legally, according to a development report on acupuncture as a discipline between 2013 and 2020, compiled by the China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion.

In clinical practice guides from more than 40 countries and regions, including the U.S., the United Kingdom and Japan acupuncture is one of the recommended therapies for certain diseases and for conditions such as pain and depression the report said.

How we stayed whole after divorce BY MAGGIE SMITH

I’VE NEVER BEEN GOOD AT MATH.  AFTER NEARLY failing algebra in high school, I chose to attend a liberal-arts college in part—in large part—because there was no general math requirement.

Even now I’m sometimes criticized for using “bad math”—unrealistic statistics—in the poem I’m most known for, “Good Bones.”  In that poem I wrote, “The world is at least fifty percent terrible” and “For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.”  For the record, I realize there aren’t an equal number of birds and rocks on this planet.  I’m aware that though the world often feels “at least half terrible,” it’s not a provable percentage.

I’m a poet, not a mathematician.  But each time “Good Bones” goes viral, typically after a tragedy, the literalists make their presence known in the comments: “You need to taka a math class!  These ratios are impossible!”

After the song “Yesterday” was released, did anyone complain to Paul McCartney, “You’re not half the man you used to be!

That’s impossible!  You’re still a whole person!”  I doubt it.  Still, feeling less than whole—particularly in one’s grief—is a pervasive metaphor.

When I was newly divorced, trying to make a fresh start for myself and my children, my thinking about my family and my new life was shaped by absence.  I looked at us and saw what was missing instead of what was there.  After a major loss or upheaval, it’s natural to think in terms of before and after.  For me, there’s B.D., Before the Divorce, and A.D., After the Divorce.  It’s natural to lay the shape of your new life over the template of your former one, and to see all the contours that don’t line up.

We had been a foursome as a family, so when my—our—children first had overnight visits at their father’s rental house, I thought of myself as the quarter missing.  When the three of them were together, they were three-quarters of the family we once were.  When the children were with me, we were missing a quarter too.  No matter the arrangement, I saw us as asymmetrical and off-kilter.  Incomplete.

THE MATH OF DIVORCE is painful: division and subtraction.  When my marriage ended, we divided our assets, our furniture, our dishes and pots and pans.  We divided our time with the children.  We divided our friendships: Who were more his people, and who were more mine?  We subtracted, too, again and again.  I lost “my other half.” I lost, over years of litigation, tens (and tens, and tens) of thousands of dollars.  I lost weight.  I lost sleep.  I lost my sense of security.  I lost the future I’d expected to have and the upbringing I’d wanted to give my daughter and son.  I grieved all of it.  I looked at my life and it didn’t add up.

One evening an old friend and I were sitting in Adirondack chairs in my backyard, commiserating about our divorces.  I told here how bewildering it had been for me, and how estranged I felt from my previous life—the B.D. years.  I said, “My life is unrecognizable from what it was five years ago.”

Then we were both quiet, and I reconsidered.  I took it back.  No, it was about constants and variables.  When I looked again, I saw that despite the losses—the dividing and subtracting—so much remained the same: I was mothering my two children in my house.  They were in the same schools with the same teachers.  My neighbors were the same, my close friends and family were the same.  My office looked out on the same street.  The same dogs walked by daily, and I greeted them by name—Molly, Brutus, Daisy, Monkey.  I recognized my life.  I realized something then: if I knew nothing of what was missing, what had been removed, my life would look full and beautiful.

I can’t make the equation work any differently: 4 – 1 = 3.  But since that night I’ve been telling myself a different story about the math.  If divorce is a time of division and subtraction, then rebuilding is a time of multiplication and addition.  I’ve lost,, but I’ve also gained, namely, perspective, as I’ve learned to see our family for what it is, without comparing it with what it was.  When I look at myself, I see a completed person, not half of a former couple.  When I look at my children, my family, I see wholeness, not a fraction.

Our house isn’t three-quarters full, it’s full.  And my heart?  That’s full too.

THE IDEA THAT OBESITY in not a disease is still controversial in mainstream medicine.  The CDC and American Medical Association (AMA) disagree with it, as do many physicians in the field.  ‘‘ ‘Healthy at any size’—I don’t even like the connotation,” says Dr. Caroline Apovian, co-director of Center for Weight Management and Wellness at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  “There is unhealthy body weight.”

Many studies show links between obesity and health problems ranging from fatty liver and sleep apnea to heart disease and cancer.  But some studies also suggest that up to half of people with obesity are metabolically healthy.  People in that camp do not have elevated risks for heart disease and death, some research suggests, and overweight people may in fact have a lower risk of premature death than those at “normal” weight.  And, even though obesity is considered a risk factor for developing heart disease, studies have found overweight patients when they’re treated for cardiovascular conditions, a trend known as the “obesity paradox.”

“We’ve got this entire body of research based on a hypothesis that if you make fat people look like thin people they’ll have the same health outcomes,” Chastain says.  But she’s not convinced that’s the case.

For one thing, body mass index (BMI), the measure commonly used to diagnose obesity, is flawed—a fact acknowledged by influential organizations including the AMA.  It cannot, for example, distinguish between fat and muscle—which is why some athletes have BMIs that technically put them in the obese range.

BMIs path to ubiquity is convoluted.  It was first developed in the 1830s by Adolphe Quetelet, a Belgian mathematician interested not in diagnosing obesity, but in defining the “average man,” an effort that mostly glossed over everyone except white men.  The resulting formula, the Quetelet Index, fit neatly a burgeoning pseudoscientific effort to draw distinctions between scholar Sabrina Strings, author of Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia.

By the early 1900s, prominent U.S. eugenicists had latched onto the idea that fatness was a maker of moral failing associated with people of color.  Fighting back against those notions, Black women were integral to fat liberation movements that began in the 1960s and laid the ground work for the modern body-positivity movement.

These activists ran counter to the mainstream medical community and insurance companies, which were growing increasingly concerned about links between obesity and health problems among people they covered.  In the 1970s, American physiologist Ancel Keys proposed using the Quetelet Index (renamed BMI) to assess obesity, and the suggestion caught on.

Today, experts widely agree that BMI is imperfect.  And yet, it’s still used in research, to diagnose obesity, and to determine who is eligible for drugs like Wegovy.

“We’re knowingly saying, ‘We don’t even know how to measure [excess fat], but we’re going to use the measure we have anyway and define two-thirds of the population as diseased,’ ” says Dr. Lisa Erlanger, a Seattle-based family-medicine physician.

Erlanger believes that weight functions less as a measure of health than as a social determinant of health—in other words, a nonmedical factor that can nonetheless affect heath through its impact on overall wellness.  People with obesity often experience weight stigma in health care, workplace, and social settings, all of which can harm their health; they are also likely to be non-white and non-college-educated, socio-economic factors also linked to poorer health because of structural inequality.

As such, Erlanger has stripped weight from her medical practice wherever possible.  Her office is designed to be comfortably navigated by people who are larger.  The waiting-room reading material doesn’t mention diets or weight loss.  She doesn’t weigh patients without permission or prescribe weight loss—and especially not weight-loss drugs.  “I support anyone’s efforts to reduce their marginalization in society,” Erlanger says.  But, at the same time, “I have an ethical obligation not to offer a treatment with false promises.”

The Gaza invasion will not make Israel safer

THERE ARE many Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a ground invasion of Gaza.  He wants to ensure that Hamas can never again murder 1,400 Israelis.  He needs to take bold action to restore the confidence of his people in their nation’s security.  He may also believe his political survival depends on erasing the shame his government faces following the most consequential security failure in Israel’s 75-year history.  None of that makes a ground invasion of Gaza the right thing to do.

There are more than 2 million Palestinians now trapped inside a war zone with nowhere to go.  Yes, Israeli forces will take steps to minimize civilian casualties, but because it is one of he world’s most densely populated areas, those precautions won’t be nearly enough.

Beyond the moral problem, Netanyahu should understand that an Israeli invasion of Gaza will not make Israel safer.  Inside Gaza, with Hamas dug in, even an Israeli victory would prove very costly in Israeli lives toll.  Israel is much more likely to be sucked into a long and brutal war than to score the hoped-for decapitation of Hamas anytime soon.

It also now appears inevitable that the large-scale killing of Palestinian civilians will force a regional escalation of the war and could raise the risk of terrorism against Jewish targets around the world.  Violence is already rising in the West Bank, which may force Israel’s security forces to split their focus even further.  That doesn’t mean Hizballah in Lebanon, much less Iran, will fully enter a war with Israel.  But we’re already seeing rocket attacks from Hizballah and other Iranian-funded proxy groups, including Houthis in Yemen, and provocative acts from militias in Iraq and Syria.

Finally, even if Israel could somehow “subdue” Palestinian resistance in Gaza, controlling security in that territory will prove harder over the longer term.  The war is radicalizing far more Palestinians than Hamas propaganda ever could.  Egypt and the wealthy Gulf Arab states, whatever their past failures to help Palestinians, have no intention of helping Netanyahu solve this problem.

The Biden Administration wants to support Israel in its hour of need, but has warned Netanyahu that Americans understand all too well the cost of responding to a massive terrorist attack with a plan that has no credible ultimate objective.

No one can fault any Israeli for wanting to scotch the terrorist organization that killed 1,400 of its men, women, and children.  But Israel will not be made safer by a full invasion of Gaza and a plan that can only kill more innocent.

Still seeking answers from Seoul’s Halloween tragedy

ONE WORD TORE CHOI JOUNG-JOO’S WORLD APART.

He first heard about crowd trouble in Seoul’s nightlife district of Itaewon on evening news bulletins, but it was a call from his wife that made panic set in.  Their 21-year-old daughter, Yujin, had set off to celebrate Halloween in Itaewon on Oct. 29, 2022, with a friend, who had phoned to tearfully explain that as the melee grew denser, she had lost grip of Yujin’s hand and consciousness soon after.

“After she woke, she had received a call from Yujin’s phone but there was no sound,” recalls Choi.  “So, she thought that may be Yujin was injured.”

Choi met Yujin’s friend in front of Seoul’s Hanyang University Hospital at 1:30 a.m.  “There were lots of reporters and TV cameras,” Choi tells TIME, standing before an unofficial memorial outside Seoul city hall for the 157 victims of the Itaewon crush.  “There were dead bodies and a lot of confusion.”

After hours of fruitless searching, Choi received a call from a policewoman.  Then came that fated, fated word.  “I just heard her say ‘unfortunately…’ and I don’t remember anything and a lot of confusion.”

Yujin was a performance-studies sophomore at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, though she had deferred her studies because of the pandemic, returning to South Korea where, in the grimmest of irony, she believed she’d be safer than in New York.

“She loved writing, acting, and music,” says Choi, 54, a media executive.  “She played the violin and was just a very positive, outgoing person.”

No father should have to bury his only child, but Choi says the actions of South Korean authorities in the year since have only compounded his sense of grief and loss.  While apologies have been issued, nobody has taken responsibility for the disaster, which occurred when an estimated 100,000 revelers converged on a narrow, 45-m alley that linked a high street metro-station entrance with another street packed with bars and restaurants.

“[Officials] try to make it the victims’ own fault,” says Choi.  “If they didn’t go there, they wouldn’t have died.”

‘Justice has not been quick---That’s very upsetting for parents.’

Nov. 17

Thakla speaks to Gaza’s grief

As war in Gaza continues, the Arabic word thakla has taken on new significance.  Referring to a parent—usually a mother—who has lost a child.  It has appeared in classical Arabic for over 1,500 years and likely predates Islam, says Mohamed-Salah Omri, a professor of modern Arabic literature at Oxford University, who adds that there is no English equivalent for the word.  With at least 3,000 children reported killed in Gaza as of Nov. 1, many people are learning the word for the first time as it spreads across social media.

Thakla implies an emotion that goes beyond the reality of the loss.  Mourning traditions in Arab culture can often include rituals of women wailing and performing eulogies in the poetic form or in rhyming prose.  Thakla invokes these traditions, which go back thousands of years.

For many Palestinians today, the term carries with it another meaning, Omri says: many feel that simply living, including having children, can be a form of resistance.

“Children are a symbol,” Omri says.  “This is why the mother figure is so central.  She is someone not only who holds the collective memory of the land but also is someone who gives birth to a new generation.”

What to know about the death toll

On Oct. 25, President Joe Biden suggested that the mounting Palestinian death toll in Gaza—which at the time stood at around 7,000—was not to be trusted.  “I’m sure innocents have been killed,” Biden said.  “But I have no confidence in the number that the Palestinians are using.” The implicit reason was clear: the Health Ministry that tallies the figures, like all government departments in Gaza, fails under Hamas leadership.

“Hamas has a clear propaganda incentive to inflate civilian casualties as much as possible,” Luke Baker, a former Reuters bureau chief who led its coverage of Israel and the Palestinian territories from 2014 to 2017, said in a recent X thread. (Baker declined to comment to TIME.)

The day after Biden’s comment, Gaza’s Health Ministry answered with a list of the dead.  The 212-page document listed 6,747 people who Palestinian officials said had been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7. (The list did not include 281 unidentified.)  TIME was not able to independently verify the list, but news outlets, international organizations, and the U.S. State Department have long relied on Israeli and Palestinian government sources for casualty figures.  Omar Shakir of Human Rights Watch says that there have historically “been no large discrepancies” between their findings and those produced by Gaza’s Health Ministry.

There is a set process by which Palestinians track their casualties, says Nour Odeh, a Ramallah-based political analyst: “After every war, a list is issued with names, gender, age, and ID number—and that happens for a reason, because you need to issue official death certificates.”  This process enables families to deal with issues such as inheritance and custody.  “This is not done by political figures; this compilation is done by health professionals,” says Odeh, “and, unfortunately, there’s a lot of practice.”

Solar eclipse / “Ring of fire

From the Pacific Northwest through the Southwest, people in the U.S. viewed a rare celestial spectacle on Oct. 14, when the moon passed between the sun and Earth, obscuring the sun’s light and bringing forth 2023’s solar eclipse.

The eclipse was an annular solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon is farthest away from Earth.  That distance means it isn’t a total eclipse because the moon does not block out all of the sun’s light.  Instead, a “ring of fire” is created in the sky when the eclipse reaches its peak.  The solar eclipse passed diagonally from states as far west as Oregon before moving south through Texas.  It was the last annular “ring of fire” solar eclipse that will be visible in the U.S. until 2039, though Alaskans will be the only ones to view that event.

Why is the internet obsessed with fall?

AUTUMN DIDN’T OFFICIALLY BEGIN UNTIL SEPT. 23, but for TikToker Chasitey Pounds, it started in June.  Pounds, 26, is one of many content creators who cultivate followings with comforting autumn visuals like pumpkin-spice lattes, candles, and chunky sweaters.  The online niche has amassed major traction, with hashatags like #autumnaesthetic and #fallaesthetic collectively gaining over 7 billion views on TikTok.  “I want to create stuff that emulates the feeling of coziness and brings people some comfort in everyday life,” she says.

Fall has been Pounds’ favorite season since she was a child.  Now, sharing seasonal videos has enabled her to leave her day job.  The internet and its fall enthusiasts have played a big role in the commodification of the season: NielsenIQ data shows all things pumpkin-spice-market produced more than $800 million from July 2022 to July 2023.

If Christmas stores can do business year-round, the North Carolina—based creator sees no reason to limit autumn to the three-month bracket of a calendar.  She’s realized that the internet is interested in cozy content in any season.  “I’m really good at emulating that autumn feeling even if it’s like 90°outside,” she says.

THE INTERNET’S LOVE of foliage content started long before the emergence of TikTok, in the early days of Pinterest and Tumblr, and on platforms like Instagram, where influencers used “fall presets” and filter apps like VSCO, whose colors imbues their images with the feeling of fall year-round.  Lifestyle YouTuber Bethany Mota became the face of the video platform thanks to her seasonal content, in particular a 2013 video with 17 million views in which she shares a fall morning routine: making tea, applying plum-hued makeup, heading to Starbucks for a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino.  One TikTok user recently referred to it as the “fall vibes big bang theory.”

Today, no one exemplifies the internet’s love for the season more than Caitlin Covington, a blogger who became the subject of the “Christian Girl Autumn” meme after her annual Vermont photo shoot went viral in 2019.  Covington, 33, has embraced the meme, even if it’s sometimes couched in a derisive tone, satirizing a certain type of perfectly coiffed white woman in a wide-brimmed hat and riding boots.  It has no doubt brought attention, which in turn helps monetize her content, including recipes and outfit photos with affiliate links.  Convington says that around 2013 or 2014, she noticed her autumn content was a star performer.  “There was a very clear distinction in engagement when I was standing next to a beautiful fall tree, or there were fall leaves on the grounds,” she says.  But the craze for fall content hasn’t been universally welcomed.  The Vermont town of Pomfret has been so overwhelmed with visitors seeking to capture brilliant fall content that it has barred tourists from one of its most photogenic roads during peak foliage.

For Pounds and Covington, the appeal of fall boils down to the sense of inherent comfort that radiates through the phone screen.  “I deal with a lot of anxiety, and life is stressful and so busy,” says Covington.  “Fall is all about embracing moments of comfort, whether a hot coffee, a really soft cardigan, or a new book.  Everybody can relate to that.”  And there may be something more subconscious at play: according to Karen Haller, a color psychology specialist and author of The Little Book of Colour, “Colors that are very low in saturation are typically seen as very soothing,” she explains.

“The world does this crazy thing where all the leaves turn from green to these beautiful vibrant colors,” says Covington.  “I think everyone can appreciate the beauty in that.”  Even on a sweltering day in June.

Bedbugs aren’t just a problem for Paris

THE NEWS REPORTS ARE ALARMING to say the least: Paris, the city known for its style, cuisine, and romance, has a bedbug problem.  But what’s behind the invasion?  How did the insects manage to infiltrate so much of the city?  With Paris hosting the first Olympics in he post-COVID-19 era next summer, those questions aren’t just matters for idle conversation.

BEDBUG BASICS Bedbugs feed almost exclusively on human blood, and find their meals by homing in on the carbon dioxide we exhale.  Because they are cautious creatures, they feed when we’re asleep or relatively immobile while sitting on a couch or chair, before scurrying back into tiny cracks and crevices in mattresses or between walls and floors.  They are remarkably hardy genetically and can inbreed with little problem for generations.

BRED TO BE BAD Today’s bedbugs are resistant to nearly every insecticide available.  While DDT and organo-phosphates effectively controlled bedbug populations for decades, after those chemicals were banned for harming human health, the insects developed resistance to remaining pesticides so that “we now have thick-skinned, hard-drinking, mutant bedbugs,” says Dini Miller, a professor of entomology at Virginia Tech.  Their thicker exoskeletons keep insecticides out, and they also have enzymes that can break down chemicals even if they do end up absorbing some.

BATTLE PLAN Bedbugs persists in any city, including Paris, because getting rid of them is expensive and involved.  The best method involves a multi-pronged strategy including some combination of pesticides, a fungus-based treatment that kills infected bug, heating an entire dwelling to 125 or above, or using silica dust to suffocate them.  Vacuuming visible bugs is also an important first step.  Ultimately, however, leaving it up to individuals to manage them may only keep the bug populations thriving.  “Unless they are dealt with on a broader, society-wide scale, the problem will not go away,” says Zachary DeVries, an assistant professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky.
