🇨🇦 Canada / Bilal Baig / part 2 / Barrier-breaking storyteller

Like their creator, Baig’s Sort Of character Sabi Mehboob sits at the intersection of social worlds.

An openly nonbinary nanny to an upper-middle-class family by day and a bartender at a queer space by night, they scrub off their makeup for visits with their traditional immigrant mother.

Cf. NB  non-binary (自らを男性・女性のどちらでもないと認識している人)

Sabi’s bond with the kids they nanny carries inherent political resonance, not least for viewers in the U.S. amid a wave of legislation targeting trans minors.

Empathy for kids who feel alienated has driven Baig’s own work with youth, which they hope to continue, perhaps be leading a creative-writing program for immigrant kids.

“I am really hungry to figure out how to continue to uplift other voices,” Baig says.

“Because if I start to feel like I’ve become the one person who needs to keep speaking about the nonbinary brown experience, the pressure becomes unbearable.

🇨🇦 Canada / Bilal Baig.

   Barrier-breaking storyteller

Bilal Baig wants to take a pause.  In April, they won top honor at the Canadian Screen Awards for Sort Of, a CBC/HBO Max dramedy they co-created and star in about a *nonbinary Torontonian of Pakistani descent who is struggling to fuse the fragments of their life.

The next day, they were back to work on Season 2.

“Sometimes I do wonder: maybe we’re not making enough space to take in these really enough cool moments of celebration,” Baig says.

Needing to make time for intro section is a recurring theme in Sort Of—a show that is ruminative where others might be strident, and subtle where others might hit viewers over the head.

Baig, who at 27 has already broken boundaries in the representation of queer, trans-feminine, Muslim identity on TV, started out in theater and was preparing to work in the nonprofit arts sector when the show was greenlighted. (to be continued)

🇰🇷 South Korea / aespa

A K-pop group that bridges the real and virtual

Giselle, Karina, Ningning, and Winter should be tired.

They just arrived in California after a long-haul flight from Seoul, after all.

But the four stars of the K-pop girl group aespa have an important job to do—and they know the stakes.

For one of the first times in their short career, they are performing for a live audience.

And not just on any stage: the much hyped Coachella.

Having launched in the thick of the pandemic in November 2020, aespa has only existed in world in crisis.

But there’s something that sets them apart: aespa also exists as four virtual avatars, each carefully crafted to match their human counterpart, in a fantastical metaverse, Now, they’re ready to prove they’re more than just what fans have seen on screens.

Quiet and focused, the four women of aespa sit lined up on a couch in a small hotel room where they have congregated for a pre-Coachella photo shoot.

It can be disconcerting to see them without their avatars, which appear in photos and videos alongside their real-life inspirations.

The uninitiated viewer might do a double take.

Aespa is an experiment, but it may also be the inevitable next step for the music industry: a fresh way to bridge the virtual and the real.

So far, aespa has released only a few singles and one six-song EP—but that EP broke records, debuting on the Billboard 200 album chart higher than any previous K-pop girl group.

Their first music video, “Black Mamba,” had YouTube’s fastest climb to 100 million views for a K-pop debut.

But the members of aespa are keen to be seen as more than just another group.

Their “metaversal origin story,” as Karina calls it, is meant to capture the imagination.

The story of aespa, designed and launched by their Korean talent-management agency, SM Entertainment, is an ambitious new piece of the SM Culture Universe.

Like Marvel or DC Comics, the company is creating an interconnected world in which all of its artist will exist—with complex backstories, narrative arcs, villain threats, and more.

It is still something of a sketch.

“Trustfully, we were worried in the beginning, because this concept of ours is something new to our company as well,” says Ninging.

“But our fans really loved it and are even creating memes out of it.”

The result: aespa is learning the concept of metaverse-native artistry at the same time as its fans—each song and video another piece in the puzzle.

The goal is to “normalize metaverse concepts and have our fans and other people be a little more comfortable with the whole idea of it,” Giselle says.

It’s a journey that fans can go on by taking the time to watch aespa’s videos and consume their content, beyond just enjoying the songs.

They want to make people think—about the selves we present online, and about the ways we interact with our virtual identities.

A few days later, Giselle, Karina, Winter, and Ningning climbed the Coachella stage in combat boots and miniskirts, with 10 minutes’ worth of music and choreography.

Their avatars flashed on the screen behind them, but the focus was on the performers.

The metaverse may be part of our inevitable collective future, but aespa is working on conquering this world first.

🇳🇵Nepal / Rinzin Phunjok Lama

Protecting nature in a remote Himalayan community

Rinzin Phunjok Lama was 16 when he first saw a Himalayan snow leopard prowling the mountains near his home in northeastern Nepal—an encounter that changed his life.

In the folklore of Lama’s Buddhist community, the snow leopard is a manifestation of the god of Nepal’s high mountain pastures, who appears on earth only when human violate the natural order.

In the moment, Lama says, he recognized that his homeland was in peril.

Lama, now 30, has since dedicated his life to wildlife conservation.

Unlike thousands of young Nepalese who leave rural areas in search of work, Lama returned to his home in Humla after graduating from college with a forestry degree.

Even in this remote corner of Nepal, the effects of climate change are clear, with ancient water sources drying up and once snow-capped mountains left bare.

Lama leads a team of trained conservationists who work to engage the community.

They document and track threatened and endangered wildlife, facilitate workshops where local people share their knowledge of the landscape, and run clubs for children to learn about conservation from an early age.

What makes Lama’s project unique is that it’s driven entirely by the people it serves.

Outsiders have previously brought sustainability efforts to the region and failed to make a lasting impact because they often did not understand the local culture, he says.

“Gaining community trust should be the first step,” Lama says.

One challenge to that has been high levels of food insecurity and poverty in the area—which makes it harder to convince people that conservation should be a priority.

To show that it’s possible to reap the benefits of the land without exploiting it, Lama’s team has launched initiatives teaching beekeeping or helping locals to sell handicrafts.

“The people leading this project, we’re from here,” he says.

“There can be no prouder moment than this for us.”

🇺🇸 United Staes / Jaz Brisack

A labor leader who went from Oxford to Starbucks

A Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford can open doors to elite worlds—to a life spent in boardrooms and at gilded galas.

Bill Clinton, for example, famously smoked (though “didn’t inhale”) marijuana there before becoming President.

Pete Buttigieg served as his cohort’s whiskey purveyor before serving as a Cabinet Secretary.

But Jaz Brisack was so unenthusiastic about her Rhodes acceptance that she almost didn’t go.

At the time, she was a University of Mississippi student volunteering on union picket lines.

Going to a fancy school to learn about organizing, rather than doing it, lacked appeal.

“I wanted to be in the movement,” says the 24-year-old.

So she raced through her studies, where she uncovered an early-1900s labor rallying cry: “Get on the job and organize.”

That became not just a section in her thesis, but a call to action.

After Oxford, Brisack didn’t try for a law degree at Yale or anywhere else.

Instead, she got a job at the Elmwood Avenue Starbucks in Buffalo, N.Y.

A year later, she helped lead its staff in the first successful unionization at a company-owned Starbucks.

“There’s no unorganizable workplace,” she says.

“There’s just workplaces that haven’t been organized yet.”

Inspired by Brisack’s work in Buffalo, 60-plus other locations have unionized, and at least 170 more have filed to hold a vote—despite Starbucks’ retaining a union-busting law firm and withholding raises from unionized workers.

It could take years before corporate Starbucks and union members codify contracts aimed at improving conditions for employees.

But Brisack isn’t going anywhere.   “I have no plans to leave Starbucks,” she says.

Neither is the unionization effort.  “It would be amazing to see every Starbucks in the country unionized,” she says.

“I think that’s very possible.”

🇲🇳 Bolar-Erdene Battsengel / Revolutionizing public services for the digital era

In 2020, when Bolor-Erdene Battsengel would walk into work in Ulan Bastor’s national parliament building, security guards would stop her to ask if she was a personal assistant or a janitor.

She was neither—she was the youngest member of the Mongolian government’s Cabinet, appointed to help lead the nation’s digital transformation.

The experience under-scored just how difficult it is for young women in leadership.

“You have to work extra hard to be accepted for who you are.” Says Battsengel 29, who now serves as state secretary for the Ministry of Digital Development.

Hard work is what took Battsengel from a rural town on the Mongolian steppe to the center of government.

At 14, she graduated from high school; she finished college at 18, and went on to the University of Oxford before working at the World Bank and the U.N.

In 2020, Battsengel helped launch the E-Mongolia platform, which has since digitized 650 government services, making it easier for Mongolians to register a company or get a driver’s license.

“Now you can access any government service in less than two minutes, and there is no physical contact needed,” she says.

This is key in a country where nomadic herders would have to drive hours to accomplish simple tasks.

Battsengel is also passionate about making spaces more welcoming for women.

“The new inequality is digital exclusion,” she says.

In 2021, she founded a Girls for Coding boot camp, which has provided training and laptops to 30 girls from the countryside; she plans to train 50 this year.

She hopes that these women can one day walk into work without facing the same questions she did.

🇺🇸 Climate:  The City of Nome / part 2

Parts of the Nome airport runway have cratered, and houses slump at odd angles, their foundations propped up by cement blocks and wooden 4-by-4s stacked in Jenga formation.

The loss of thick sea ice means the Indigenous groups that make up half the town’s population, and most of the surrounding communities, can no longer reliably hunt, harvest, or fish the foods that sustain them year-round.

Meanwhile, unusual winter weather conditions—rain, wind, insufficient snow—have in recent years forced Iditarod dog mushers to reroute or stop early.

Overall, the Arctic is warming four times as fast as the rest of the planet.

In mid-March, there was at least one day where temperatures hit as high as 30 above the March average near the North Pole.

Within a few years, says Diana Haecker, the Nome-based editor of Mushing Magazine, the Iditarod may not be able to finish in Nome at all.

Instead, a changing climate could turn Nome, one of the U.S.’s northernmost ports, into an entirely different kind of destination.

Layered with thick ice most of the year, the Arctic Ocean has historically been all but impassable, but warming temperatures have seen sea-ice volume reduced by two-thirds since measurements were first taken in 1958.

A 2020 study published in Nature Climate Change predicts mostly ice-free Arctic summers as early as 2035 if greenhouse-gas emissions are not radically reduced.

Nature Climate Change』

Ships will soon be able to sail directly across the top of the world, bringing new commercial, political, and economic opportunities for Arctic towns in their path, while substantially reducing transit time between Asia and Europe by up to a third compared with taking the Suez Canal.

🇺🇸 A polar paradox /

A decade ago, the west coast of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago was impassable by ships until May.  Now they can navigate it as early as March, when this 2018 photo was taken.

A melting north pole could destroy a way of life while also bringing health to Alaskan communities

The city of Nome, on Alaska’s Bering Sea coast, has long been the home of adventurers, chancers, and fiercely independent who would rather live off the land than to do their shopping at Walmart.

Originally a Native Inupiat settlement that was taken over by miners in the 1899 gold rush, it is perhaps best known as the end point of the celebrated Iditarod dogsled race, which is run every March in commemoration of an epic effort to deliver essential medical supplies during a 1925 diphtheria outbreak when bad weather prevented airplane access.

To this day there are no roads connecting the settlement to the rest of the U.S., or to the rest of Alaska, for that matter.

The options are dogsled, snowmobile, sea, or air.

Opting for the latter, I landed in Nome (pop. 3,699) in late September.

As I waited for my suitcase, I struck up a conversation with a man who called himself Yukon John.

The unusually long summer season had been a good one for the gold miner, he said.

To prove it, he pressed a small heavy-for-its-size plastic jar into my hands.

It was full of granulated gold, panned from the mineral-rich sandbanks just offshore.

Then he added a trio of thumb-size nuggets.

That was just a tiny sample of his latest haul, he told me.

Last spring the ice that usually locks the coast in an impenetrable shield broke up early, and if the previous year was anything to go by, it wouldn’t re-form until late fall.

That gave Yukon John plenty of time to dredge for gold at his Bering Sea claim.

The miner said he doesn’t spend much time thinking about global warming, but if climate change means more opportunities for hitting the sandbanks, well, “Bring it on.

The way I see it, we have to take advantage of whatever comes our way.”

      Yukon John’s fortune could be Nome’s down-fall.

Without the protective sea-ice shield, winter storms batter houses and buildings along ocean-side Front Street, blasting past the rock barriers and tearing up the pavement.

Permafrost, the layer of frozen soil and ice that serves as the Arctic region’s bedrock, is starting to thaw because of rising temperatures, and the entire town is buckling in a slow-motion earthquake.

🇺🇸 A truth as cold as ice / part 2

Penguins aren’t just adorable icons of Antarctica.

They’re sentinel species—an animal whose behaviors can tell scientists if something is going wrong in a particular environment.

Chinstraps feed mainly on krill, tiny crustaceans that are the foundation of the marine food chain.

Almost every animal in the ocean eats either krill or something else that eats krill, all the way up to the tuna that ends upon our dinner table.

Krill feed on the algae and phytoplankton that cling to the underside of ocean ice.

As global temperatures rise because of increased carbon emissions, sea ice is declining.

It would be impossible to survey the health of the world’s krill populations, but if chinstraps aren’t doing well, it’s likely that krill, and everything that eats krill, aren’t doing well either.

And our carbon canaries are not doing well.

The Stony Brook researchers found that most of the chinstrap colonies had declined over the past 50 years, some by half and others by up to 77%.

We can wring our hands over the looming loss of a charismatic species, but “Save the Penguins: Use Solar” doesn’t go far enough as a slogan.

It doesn’t fully encompass what the loss of this penguin species portends for the future of humanity on this planet.

Climate change moves so slowly as to feel almost imperceptible to us—What difference, after all, does a fraction of a single degree make on our day-to-day lives?—but lay that trajectory over something more fragile and less resilient like the chinstraps, and it quicky becomes clear that the domino effect of climate change is already starting to reach uncomfortably close to home.

       Or at least it should.

There is an incomprehensible disconnect between what climate science says must be done—an immediate shift in how we produce energy, travel, and eat—and what we, and our leaders, are willing to do.

At what point does the distant threat of ecological collapse assume the fierce urgency of how?

When the sea ice is entirely gone?

When the penguins are?

By then it will be too late.

🇺🇸 Essay / A truth as cold as ice / by Aryn Baker

After visiting both ends of the earth, I realized how much trouble we’re in

Nothing on earth compares with the icy sweeps of the planet’s polar extremes.

It’s why, perhaps, explorers and scientists who have been there often seek more distant analogies, describing the poles’ austere swaths of frozen terrain in lunar terms, unworldly with their slimmed-down palettes of white, black, and icy blues.

Home only to the most exquisitely adapted organisms, the Arctic and Antarctic are largely lethal to humankind, unforgiving with their dark winters, harsh winds, and violent cold.

Yet these remote, inhospitable places have more impact on our lives than almost anything closer to home.

The poles regulate our climate, our weather patterns, and even our mari-time food supply.

And they are warming faster than anywhere else on earth, with untold consequences for those who live at the planet’s more accommodating latitudes.

I saw this firsthand on Feb. 6, 2020, when Antarctica logged its hottest temperature on record—18.3℃(64.9℉)—at Argentina’s Esperanza weather station.

I was on nearby Anvers Island, accompanying a team of ornithologists from New York’s Stony Brook University conducting a census of the region’s chinstrap penguin population.

Members of the expedition relished the balmy weather, stripping down to T-shirts, but it was an ominous sign for the species they were there to document.
